Mike Vail
Director, Adult Education

Mike Vail attended both Temple and NYU for English and Dramatic Writing while supporting himself as a bike messenger in San Francisco, a waiter in New York City, and constructing condos in West Palm Beach.

Since 1977, Mike has taught and administered at the high school, college, out of school youth, and ABE/GED/ESL levels in the capacities of Educator, Area Coordinator, Program Manager and Director. While at the Center for Literacy, he co-created the Adult Diploma Program, a project based, life skills oriented, independent learning curriculum, leading to a secondary credential from the Philadelphia School District. Since 1999, over 1000 Philadelphians have earned their high school diplomas through this program.

In addition to his work with the CFL, Mike has taught part time at District 1199C in a program designed to prepare students to succeed in 1199C’s LPN program; he co-founded the Diversity Apprenticeship Program, a program designed to diversify the trade labor unions in the city, at Cheyney University; and he facilitated professional development modules with the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy, modules focused on Assessment, Case Management, Hands on with theTABE, and Core Training for New Teachers.

Mike was named one of three Outstanding Adult Ed Practitioners of the year in 2000 by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in acknowledgement of his efforts on behalf of the Philadelphia Adult Learner.
