Teaching the Adult Nonreader to Read
Description
- Hand out selections from research indicating that phonemic skills and understanding the letter sound correspondence are absent in adult non-readers and very poor readers.
- Briefly discuss essential components to teach decoding.
- Walk through a program suitable for teaching non-reading adults to begin to quickly develop phonemic skills, phonics skills and knowledge and begin to read.
- Guide participants through practice activities.
- Provide ABeCeDarian’s Shortest A packet, which I have found very successful for rapidly getting non-reading adults started reading.
- Hand out and discuss resource sheet listing support materials and where to go next with instruction when students have mastered the information and skills in the beginning packet.
