Teaching the Adult Nonreader to Read

Description

  1. Hand out selections from research indicating that phonemic skills and understanding the letter sound correspondence are absent in adult non-readers and very poor readers.
  2. Briefly discuss essential components to teach decoding.
  3. Walk through a program suitable for teaching non-reading adults to begin to quickly develop phonemic skills, phonics skills and knowledge and begin to read.
  4. Guide participants through practice activities.
  5. Provide ABeCeDarian’s Shortest A packet, which I have found very successful for rapidly getting non-reading adults started reading.
  6. Hand out and discuss resource sheet listing support materials and where to go next with instruction when students have mastered the information and skills in the beginning packet.
