Exit Slate, Enter Keyboard: Integrating Technology into the Classroom
Description
My proposal for the Fall Institute is an exploration into integrating resources from the web into the ABE/GED classroom. Included will be techniques for the classroom as well as technology resources for teachers, including technology for instructional purposes. Using the web, we will discuss its applications for person and professional use. The presentation is an interactive (learn by doing) workshop, so internet connectivity for the participants is required. Participants will be made aware of sites, programs and methodologies that facilitate success in multi-leveled educational environments thereby learning:
- Effective search methods to aid in web searches
- The computer’s role in individualized instruction
- A tour of typing, keyboarding, and mouse tutorials
- Sites for free math and English worksheets
We will begin to explore the resources and tools that are available to empower learners and teachers as the internet is packed with treasures for the classroom. There’s a comprehensive online system that includes tools for creating documents, presentations, spreadsheets, models, blogs, discussions, tours, and calendars, all of which can be accessed online and can be used for collaboration. Also, a teacher can take a single idea and develop it simultaneously as a lecture, as a slide show, as an enhanced podcast (which can also play as a video), as plain text, and as an illustrated booklet.
There are myriad ways teachers can incorporate technology effectively into their courses---from finding lesson plans, activities, projects, games, and quizzes that use technology, to exploring inquiry-based lessons, activities, and projects. The workshop will discuss new and emerging technologies such as blogs, podcasts, wikis, iPods, and online social networks and explore innovative ways of integrating them into the curriculum. The participants in this workshop will learn how technology in the classroom can enrich the curriculum, engage students and increase student motivation.
