Learning Legislative Advocacy

Facilitator
Nora Peterman

Description

We know that literacy “freeze” you, but funding for literacy programs is still in a “deep freeze”. It is imperative that our learners understand how funding and other legislative decisions are made so that they can be active participants in the process and advocate for themselves and their families.
In this workshop, we will explore some of the many ways that teachers can bring civic engagement into their classrooms. Some of the topics we will discuss are recognizing our students’ strengths and resources, introducing the vocabulary of social activism, crafting personal narratives, and engaging in meaningful action. Incorporating the arts, primary sources, technology (particularly social media), picture books and other resources will help students engage with the ideas and questions of democratic participation on multiple levels.
