Individual Donors

Every year, hundreds of individuals make the Center for Literacy a priority in their individual philanthropic activities. Given the vast number of nonprofit organizations with admirable missions in the Philadelphia area, it is incredibly inspiring and encouraging to know that there are so many donors who recognize the importance of literacy programs and the criticality of CFL’s mission.

Citizens of Philadelphia, Delaware County, New Jersey and beyond recognize that CFL programs have a tangible, quantifiable impact on their communities. Improving literacy rates helps reduce crime rates, health care costs, drug addiction and unemployment. In every learner, CFL sees the potential for healthier families, stronger communities, and a more educated workforce.

Successfully completing a high school diploma program, passing the GED exam, experiencing the benefits of stronger literacy skills – each of these represents a major step for learners on the road to a healthier, safer, better informed and more economically stable life. Activities like reading a sign or a menu, filling out a job application, writing a check or reading the directions for a prescription are no longer the daunting challenges they once were. CFL learners have the opportunity to apply for jobs for which they were once under-qualified, or to advance their position with their current employer. For those learners with families, each positive change in their life resulting from education is an improvement for their family as well. Parents can read to their children and help them with their homework, and by doing so, they convey to their children the importance of education.
