10/28/2008 - Verizon Supports CFL
The Verizon Foundation, staying true to its mission to strengthen educational opportunities for children and adults and improve literacy has awarded a $20,000 technology grant to the Center for Literacy.
9/30/2008 - Reading Writers Pre-Event
Mayor Michael Nutter, Marciene Mattleman, Wilson Goode, Sr., Brian Tierney, Verizon, Dollar General, and others named Literacy Champions. The Center for Literacy’s annual fundraiser Reading Writers, on Monday, November 10, 2008 at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre will host a special ceremony to honor the champions.
9/22/2008 - Literacy Champions
The Center for Literacy names Literacy Champions, individuals or corporations that have demonstrated a commitment to literacy. Mayor Michael Nutter, Philadelphia Media Holdings CEO Brian Tierney, Verizon, and Dollar General Literacy Foundation are a few of the champions.
7/2/2008 - United Way Supports Literacy Education
The Center for Literacy, after an intensive competition involving almost 550 agencies, has been awarded $174,969 by United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Although CFL has been a donor choice option for a number of the years, this will be CFL’s first time receiving an operating grant from the United Way.
6/30/2008 - Read-A-Thon
Many gathered at the Commerce Square Courtyard at 20th and Market for an afternoon of food and inspirational speakers to celebrate CFL’s 40th anniversary. NBC 10 personality Lori Wilson and Philadelphia Magazine’s Carol Saline were guest speakers.
6/20/2008 - Commencement 2008 with Lisa Nutter
This year’s graduating class had much to celebrate. Over 50 students received School District of Philadelphia issued high school diplomas and students in CFL’s GED program, who successfully passed the five subject areas of the GED exam, received certificates of achievement.
5/30/2008 - Graduation 2008
Lisa Nutter, wife of Mayor Michael Nutter and president of Philadelphia Academies Inc. will deliver the keynote speech to CFL adult students. The commencement will be held June 30 at Community College of Philadelphia at 6 p.
5/19/2008 - SpeakOut 2008
CFL adult students gave personal insight into their literacy journey at the 20th annual SpeakOut, held Monday May 12, at the Philadelphia Free Library. The event featured students reading their original writings and award presentations.
4/22/2008 - Urban Youth Center
The Center for Literacy, the nation’s largest and Philadelphia’s oldest community-based literacy provider is developing an Urban Youth Center to aid high school drop-outs get a diploma. CFL will use a planning grant awarded by the Annenberg Foundation and a grant to create alternative curriculum from the William Penn Foundation to fund the initiative.
