Several hundred residents suddenly froze in place in Center City Friday afternoon as part of a “Literacy Freeze” designed to attract attention to the negative impact low literacy has on both Philadelphia residents and the local economy.
8/26/2009 - Pennsylvania Non-profits United for a Fair Budget
Pennsylvania non-profits united their voices to end the Pa. budget stalemate at a rally held outside the courthouse in Media, PA. The rally drew over 400, who urged legislators to end the budget impasse affecting thousands of Pennsylvanians.
8/24/2009 - Pennsylvania Budget Stalemate Leads Non-profits to Rally
Social service organizations and supporters will rally on Wednesday, August 26 at noon at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media urging legislators to pass a state budget.
7/10/2009 - CFL Receives $190,000 Grant From PHA
The Center for Literacy will commence Adult Basic Education and General Equivalency Diploma classes for families and eligible individuals living in PHA housing in late July. PHA residents now have the opportunity to receive free instruction to improve their literacy skills, job readiness, and help with obtaining their high school credentials because of a PHA grant given to CFL totaling $190,955.
6/30/2009 - Literacy Research Indicates Low Literacy Hampers Philadelphia Workforce
The Center for Literacy hosted a press conference to release a new report, which states that 52 percent of working-age Philadelphians lack necessary workforce literacy skills. The research findings published in “Help Wanted,” a publication of the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board (PWIB) found a little over half of Philadelphia adults do not possess high enough literacy levels for the knowledge-based jobs available.
6/26/2009 - Breakthrough Literacy Research is Released at Press Conference
Local media in Philadelphia will gather at Center for Literacy at 1315 Walnut Street at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 29 for the release of new research detailing Philadelphia’s literacy crisis and its ties to Philadelphia’s weakening workforce.
6/24/2009 - Triumphant Graduates Celebrate a New Beginning
An auditorium packed with adoring family, friends, and well wishers experienced the overwhelming joy of CFL’s class of 2009 at their commencement ceremony held at CCP. By the end of the night, everyone in the auditorium learned of what an amazing accomplishment the graduates have made by earning their high school diplomas through the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and Adult Diploma Programs (ADP).
6/22/2009 - Adult Students Help Themselves to High School Diplomas
CFL students who have successfully completed the ADP and GED programs have earned a commencement celebration in their honor. Graduation takes place at CCP on June 23 at 6 p.m. Pat Ciarrocchi, CBS 3-news anchor will deliver the commencement address.
6/10/2009 - Center for Literacy Receives $20,000 Grant for English Language Programs
The Connelly Foundation has awarded CFL $20,000 to support its English Language classes in the 2009-2010 academic year. The grant will help facilitate CFL’s further expansion into South Philadelphia, which has a large Latino and Southeast Asian population.
6/2/2009 - Volunteer Tutor Recognition
Volunteer tutors received praise and appreciation at the Center for Literacy’s (CFL) annual Tutor Recognition event. Volunteer tutors, CFL staff, and friends all crowded into the Skylight Lounge at the Free Library to honor its tutors on Monday, June 1, 2009.
5/12/2009 - Center for Literacy Students SpeakOut
Guests at the Center for Literacy’s (CFL) 21st annual SpeakOut held Monday, May 11 received an education. This time, CFL students were the teachers. Almost 200 people attended the event and received lessons on courage, perseverance, and the reality that 22 percent of Philadelphians are low literate, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

2/13/2009 - Employer of Choice Award
Center for Literacy Named Best Nonprofit To Work For in the Country Opportunity Knocks, a national job site for the non-profit community announced winners of its second annual Peoples Choice Best Nonprofits to Work for Awards and CFL was one of only two local non-profits to make the list.
2/12/2009 - CFL Educator is Outstanding Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year
Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE), a bureau of the Pennsylvania Department of Education honored CFL educator Mark A. Edmonds as Outstanding Teacher of the Year. He was honored at the Pennsylvania Association for Adult Continuing Education (PAACE) Midwinter Conference on Adult Education Wednesday, February 11, 2009.
2/6/2009 - New Website
To stay current with new technology and provide the best service, the Center for Literacy contracted Ninth Degree to redevelop its website. The website will go live on Friday, February 6, 2009 with new content loaded daily, so stay tuned.
