The Center for Literacy’s annual fund-raiser, Reading Writers was successful at bringing in $52,000 to benefit CFL education programs. Over 200 guests gathered at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre to celebrate on Monday night.

Researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health concluded that programs to boost the academic achievement of children from low income neighborhoods might be more successful if they also provided adult literacy education to parents.

“This grant came at the perfect time,” said JoAnn Weinberger, president and CEO of CFL. “The more than 15 percent cut to the adult education budget created a dilemma for us. We saw our wait list increasing without the means to service the individuals that need our help.

An auditorium packed with friends, family, and well wishers all cheered loudly for the 41 Center for Literacy (CFL) adult students receiving their high school diplomas last night at Community College of Philadelphia (CCP).

The Center for Literacy has received a $30,000 grant from the Jane Ann Krause Trust Fund of The Philadelphia Foundation to support its general operations. R. Andrew Swinney, president of the Foundation, whose board managers approved the grant on May 4, 2010, made announcement of the grant.

Join CFL for the 22nd annual Student SpeakOut on Monday, April 19 at the Free Library of Philadelphia at 1901 Vine St. at 6 p.m. in the Montgomery Auditorium. The event is free! The Student SpeakOut is among CFL’s most anticipated events and features students reading their original writings.
