English as a Second Language
Currently, CFL has fifteen English as a Second Language (ESL) classes throughout the city of Philadelphia. Many classes have students from every corner of the world, and all of them are multi-level and multi-cultural. Classes meet at different times in different locations to accommodate as many learners as possible.
All classes are learner-centered and provide instruction for students to accomplish their short term and long term goals. Students not only learn how to understand the English language and be understood, but they also learn about American culture and gradually become comfortable with the American way of life. Nine of the classes are funded by an EL/Civics grant, federal funds that come through the PA Dept. of Education. History and civics are integrated themes.
ESL tutors work with learners throughout the city, as well. These specially trained volunteers work with students one-on-one or in small groups to help them become more familiar with the language and customs of their new home.
Philadelphia is a city of immigrants from all over the world. These immigrants come to Philadelphia to make a better life for themselves and especially for their children. Our ESL teachers and staff play an important part in helping them reach their goals
