Professional Development

BUILDING KNOWLEDGE & CONTENT AREA LITERACY
Professional Development Series (Available for Secondary Educators)

A series of four professional development modules have been developed to emphasize connections between literacy, mathematics, science, English, and social studies and the need to integrate literacy development within content areas taught.  The sessions include opportunities for teachers to reflect on their teaching practices and share successes and challenges.  The sessions provide practical strategies with support for lesson planning and teaching application. Guided practice activities are provided and literacy strategies are modeled to promote teacher confidence and willingness to incorporate the teaching and learning strategies into their daily content area lessons.  Teachers are expected and encouraged to use/adapt the strategies to expand their current practices for increased opportunities for students’ literacy development within the content area(s) that are taught.  To promote implementation and collaboration, lesson plans are collected and shared among teachers.
