Tutoring Program

According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, nearly half of all adults in Pennsylvania and the United States do not have adequate literacy skills to be effective in the workplace. Over 20% of adults cannot perform tasks like locating an intersection on a street map or totaling the entry on a bank deposit slip. Low literacy skills keep this portion of our population from achieving their potential as citizens, family members, workers, and individuals. Tutoring with the Center for Literacy gives you the opportunity to help someone in our city reach their educational goals. As a volunteer tutor you will not only positively impact the life of an adult learner, you will also gain experience in education and have the chance to build valuable interpersonal relationships. Please help us help our learners!

Volunteer tutors at CFL are asked to make a six-month commitment to work either one-on-one or in small groups with adult students throughout Philadelphia who are working to improve their reading, writing, math, or English language skills. No certification is necessary; CFL will provide training, all necessary materials, a place to meet, and ongoing support to tutors and learners. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please look at the Tutor Orientation Schedule. Choose a workshop located in the area of the city in which you would like to tutor, and register by calling the contact person at the listed phone number. Workshops are free and open to the public; advance registration is necessary. You can also obtain more information about CFL's tutoring program by calling (215) 351-1670.
